Best ABA Data Collection Features: 7 Data Types and How Mastery Is Measured

Illustration for Best ABA Data Collection Features: 7 Data Types and How Mastery Is Measured

The ABA data collection types a session app should support — trials with prompts, frequency, duration, latency, intervals, task analysis and ABC — plus graphs, mastery and the signed note.

A data collection app earns its place when an RBT can run a whole session without looking down for long, and a BCBA can trust the graph. TargetFlo's Data collection (Clinical menu) supports the seven ABA data types below on a tablet, iPhone, iPad or Android phone.

1. Trials with prompt levels

+, −, no response, or a prompt level from your organization's prompt hierarchy. Measures: percent independent and percent correct.

2. Frequency

+1 per occurrence with undo. Measures: count and rate per hour.

3. Duration

Start and stop bouts. Measures: total seconds and percent of session. Timers come from timestamps, so they keep running through target switches, screen lock and app switching.

4. Latency

Time from the instruction to the response; no response is recorded automatically after 60 seconds by default. Measure: mean latency.

5. Interval recording

A clock that beeps and vibrates at each boundary; answer Yes or No per interval. Measure: percent of intervals.

6. Task analysis

Score each step; forward and backward chaining highlight the training step. Measure: percent of steps independent.

7. ABC

Session-level entries: antecedent (demand placed, denied access, transition …), behavior, consequence (attention given, demand removed, redirected …), intensity and setting.

What happens after the session

  • Submit freezes the session's summaries, so later programming edits never rewrite history.
  • Graphs: one point per session, a line per phase, phase-change markers and the mastery line.
  • Mastery is a badge; the BCBA confirms phase changes by hand.
  • The signed note is the billing gate — no signature, no charge. See signed note to paid claim.
